Tyler McGregor
A Champion. For Progress.
Tyler McGregor knows being a champion isn’t about the situations you find yourself in, but how you respond to the challenges they present. Growing up in Canada, Tyler fostered a passion for ice hockey and devoted himself to developing as an athlete in the rink. Then, as a teen, he needed to have his leg amputated as the result of a cancer diagnosis.
He knew he wanted to get back to hockey. Eventually, a former coach introduced him to para-ice hockey. At first, he tried to play with the standing amputee team, but found sledge hockey to be a better fit. Through his ability to adapt, develop and meet the challenges presented to him, Tyler was able to work his way onto the Canadian Paralympic team for his chosen sport. Ahead of the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games, Tyler and his teammates have their eyes on Gold.
A champion's focus
Tyler made his international debut in 2012. The next year, Tyler appeared as the youngest member of Team Canada at the IPC Ice Sledge World Hockey Championships. In 2014, he represented Team Canada at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, where he was awarded the Bronze Medal. At the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, Tyler served as an alternate captain and helped lead his team to Silver.
This drive and championing spirit has led him to lead off the ice as well. In 2016, he began working with Classroom Champions, a non-profit organization that works with K-8 students to help them develop skills both inside and outside of the classroom. He also continues to share his story, drive and leadership qualities as a keynote speaker. Sharing these lessons is important to Tyler, who knows how important support is and cites his parents as the most influential presence in his athletic career.
